China struggles to identify rescued kidnap victims

2009-10-28T04:23:10-0700
Wed Oct 28, 7:23 am ET

BEIJING – Police in China have created a Web site with photos of 60 rescued kidnap victims, mostly boys and many of them infants, in a bid to track down their families.

The Ministry of Public Security "Babies Looking for Home" Web site is part of a nationwide crackdown on widespread trafficking of women and children. State media have reported hundreds of rescues and arrests since the campaign began in April, but the new site shows that at least 60 children have yet to be reunited with their families.

The site includes short physical descriptions of each child, the date they were rescued and a contact number for the or welfare official in charge of their case. The youngest appear to be just a few months old and 39 of them are boys.

The ministry said in a statement announcing the site Tuesday that 2,008 children were rescued between April 9 and Oct. 12 of this year.

Some of the older children profiled were taken years ago. It was not clear from the site when exactly they were found by authorities.

China's traditional preference for male heirs has driven a thriving market in baby boys, who fetch a considerably higher price than girls. Girls and women are also abducted and often used as laborers or as brides for unwed sons.

Some families sell their female babies in order to try for a boy, since the country's one-child policy limits most families to having one child.

Andre Agassi says he used crystal meth during playing days - Busted Racquet - TEN - Yahoo! Sports

Andre Agassi says he used crystal meth during playing days - Busted Racquet - TEN - Yahoo! Sports

OMG - did you know this?

Andre Agassi says he used crystal meth during playing days

Note: Post updated with book excerpts at the bottom.

Tennis legend Andre Agassi reveals in his forthcoming autobiography "Open" that he used crystal meth during his playing career, Paul Bogaards, a spokesman for the book's publisher, confirmed to the New York Daily News on Tuesday.

According to the Daily News, the eight-time Grand Slam champion admits using the illicit drug in 1997, the year he married Brooke Shields and went into a career slump that didn't end until 1999.

After pulling out of that slump, Agassi went on to win five Grand Slams and became only the fifth player to complete the career Slam. He has been heavily involved in charity work since retirement, opening his own charter school and championing educational reform throughout the country.

The information was first released this morning on the Twitter account of SI.com media analyst Richard Deitsch, but was subsequently removed:

"FYI: There's an off-the-charts book excerpt from Andre Agassi in the forthcoming SI: He admits to taking crystal meth during his career."

Both Sports Illustrated and People will run excerpts from the book.

Releasing this admission a week ahead of the book's release is an obvious ploy to generate interest and sell copies, and it's working. Almost all autobiographies are self-serving odes to one's own pursuit of greatness. They're rarely interesting. Agassi's could be different.

He's always been forthcoming with the press about his issues, whether it be his overbearing father, the therapy he underwent while his career was in shambles (the first time) or the true reason he cut his hair. The vulnerable, intense picture on the cover suggests more of the same is inside. (Compare it to the covers of other recent tennis autobiographies that look straight out of a Sears catalog.)

We'll reserve judgment on the drug use until we read the book excerpts, which should hit newsstands on Tuesday. The book will be released Nov. 9.

Update: (11:47 p.m. ET) The first excerpts have been released and, wow, are they explosive. Not only does Agassi admit to using crystal meth, but he describes how he evaded drug testers by lying about his useage.

In the first excerpt Agassi writes about taking the drug at home with an assistant known only as Slim:

"Slim is stressed too ... He says, You want to get high with me? On what? Gack. What the hell's gack? Crystal meth. Why do they call it gack? Because that's the sound you make when you're high ... Make you feel like Superman, dude.

"As if they're coming out of someone else's mouth, I hear these words: You know what? F*** it. Yeah. Let's get high.

"Slim dumps a small pile of powder on the coffee table. He cuts it, snorts it. He cuts it again. I snort some. I ease back on the couch and consider the Rubicon I've just crossed.

"There is a moment of regret, followed by vast sadness. Then comes a tidal wave of euphoria that sweeps away every negative thought in my head. I've never felt so alive, so hopeful - and I've never felt such energy.

"I'm seized by a desperate desire to clean. I go tearing around my house, cleaning it from top to bottom. I dust the furniture. I scour the tub. I make the beds."

Later on, Agassi writes, he received a call from ATP doctors telling him he'd tested positive for meth.

"My name, my career, everything is now on the line. Whatever I've achieved, whatever I've worked for, might soon mean nothing. Days later I sit in a hard-backed chair, a legal pad in my lap, and write a letter to the ATP. It's filled with lies interwoven with bits of truth.

"I say Slim, whom I've since fired, is a known drug user, and that he often spikes his sodas with meth - which is true. Then I come to the central lie of the letter. I say that recently I drank accidentally from one of Slim's spiked sodas, unwittingly ingesting his drugs. I ask for understanding and leniency and hastily sign it: sincerely.

"I feel ashamed, of course. I promise myself that this lie is the end of it."

The ATP accepted Agassi's version of events and he received no drug suspension.

Strong winds whip the San Gabriel Valley, kicking up dust and ash into the air

Strong winds whipped the San Gabriel Valley Tuesday afternoon, kicking up dust and ash from the recent Station Fire into the air.

The winds are expected to peak -- reaching gusts of 40 m.p.h. -- Tuesday night and continue until Wednesday morning, according to Bonnie Bartling, a weather specialist at the National Weather Service.

The NWS released a wind advisory for the San Gabriel Valley that is expected to last until Wednesday at 11 a.m., Bartling said.

The winds will be even stronger in the San Gabriel Valley mountains, where gusts of winds may reach 70 m.p.h.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District warned residents near recently-burned areas, such as the Angeles National Forest, that the winds could kick up ash into the air, reducing air quality.

Residents in these areas should avoid vigorous activity, and people with respiratory or heart disease, the young and elderly should remain indoors, according to the AQMD.

The dust worried local residents who thought the dust signaled not winds but fires, said Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian.

The fire department has been receiving calls all Tuesday afternoon asking if there was a fire, she said.

By Tuesday evening, Derderian had received no reports of powerlines or property damage caused by the wind.

Annandale Canyon to be dedicated Thursday

PASADENA - Annandale Canyon, one of the city's last remaining wilderness areas saved as public land after a seven-year effort, will be publicly dedicated at 10 a.m. on Thursday near the corner of Weirfield and Carlson drives.

Mayor Bill Bogaard, Pasadena Councilman Steve Madison, Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, and representatives from Supervisor Mike Antonovich's Office and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy will be present to dedicate this new wilderness.

New hiking trails are being planned to make it more accessible for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to access the natural beauty of the arroyo, which has inspired many Pasadena generations and artists. The canyon is home to wildlife, including deer that have settled in a forest now awash in fall colors.

The area was bought in 2001 as a proposed housing development. With the cooperation of developer Jon Head, neighborhood residents, the Linda Vista/Annandale Association, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, Los Angeles County and the city of Pasadena, $6.2 million was raised to acquire the property.

The recommended route to the dedication is to drive north on Patrician Way, turn left on Glen Oaks and then left on Wierfield Drive to where signs are posted. For more information call (626) 744-6735.

South Pasadena burglary suspect caught

SOUTH PASADENA - Police arrested a suspect in Monday's break-in where the burglar fled on a bicycle with $200 in jewelry.

Sean Patrick Lynch, 30, of Pasadena was arrested Tuesday and booked on suspicion of burglary, receiving stolen property and possession of methamphetamine. He was being held at Pasadena Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Police also recovered part of the jewelry taken from a house in the 2000 block of Meridian Avenue on Monday and stolen property from four other burglaries, according to South Pasadena Police Sgt. Tony Abdalla.

Abdalla said a burglar cut a window screen to get into the Meridian Avenue house. The resident came home at about 12:45 p.m., Monday and found the burglar. The man rode away on a red and white mountain bike.

Police said Lynch, who used to live in South Pasadena, is also a suspect in two vehicle burglaries and two residential burglaries that happened between Oct. 17 and Oct. 26 in South Pasadena.

Abdalla said officers found items stolen from those burglaries such as an iPhone battery charger and a computer hard drive at Lynch's residence. Officers also recovered a mountain bike.

Anonymous: My husband won't "friend" me on Facebook but won't say why. Give me some reasons other than he's trying to hide something from me. My overactive imagination is getting the best of me!

Emily Yoffe: It's amazing how quickly Facebook has gone from something college students used to check each other out to the primary way people offend each other, initiate affairs (and say, "Hey, you may not know me, but I'm your sister/mother/father/child"). He's your husband, so I'm not really equipped to come up with the reasons he doesn't want you knowing what he's up to on Facebook. Maybe he's a bass fisherman and he's trying to save you from the almost terminal boredom of reading the posts of his bass-fishing buddies. Or maybe he's fishing around in the old high-school pond, and he doesn't want you to see that some of the ex-cheerleaders still look pretty good. It's one thing if your husband won't friend you on Facebook; it's another if your marital communication is so wanting you can't even have a conversation about why.

the scent of green papaya

amazing review:

Buddhist Love Story, 19 August 2004
Author: Reed Waller from Minnesota

This stunningly beautiful film has a strong Buddhist theme, so it's unsurprising that many American viewers were perplexed by it even while captivated by its

beauty. It is the story of Mui, a poor servant girl ... except she is no ordinary servant girl, she is an Enlightened One. She lives totally in the here and now, and sees and appreciates everything (and so do we, thanks to the breathtaking color cinematography). She quietly goes through her ordinary life, giving every tiny moment all her attention and invisibly enriching the lives of all those around her, until near the end of the picture she is given off to a family friend whom, coincidentally, she has fancied since she was little. He is engaged to another woman, but one day he picks up a bust of Buddha, and stares at it with

recognition, realizing suddenly that the face and the smile of the Buddha are something he has been seeing every day, on Mui. He sees her for what she is,

and both their lives are transformed.

Even more astounding than the richness and beauty of this film, is the feat of finding two wonderful actresses 10 years apart, to play the same very unusual girl, both identically beautiful and graceful and having the Buddha smile.

Intoxicating and unforgettable.

Rush Was Punked: “Obama Thesis” Hoax

by Claudine Zap

It must have seemed so perfect. An obscure blogger unearths some pages of President Obama's college thesis. The report supposedly comes from big-time journalist Joe Klein of Time magazine. And the thesis has some real gems: like Obama's disdain for the Constitution.

The whole thing was nothing more than a satirical post on a humor blog. But Rush Limbaugh, who quoted from the supposed thesis on his radio show, sure wasn't laughing. Here's how it went down.

An unknown blogger picked up on a made-up post meant as a joke, which claimed that Joe Klein had gotten his hands on 10 pages of student Obama's college thesis. Rush Limbaugh jumped on it, which immediately sparked Web searches on "obama thesis."

Supposedly titled "Aristocracy Revisited," the excerpt revealed the president had "doubts" about the "so-called founders." Juicy. Except not true. Limbaugh discovered halfway through his show that he'd been had, but defended himself by saying basically the thesis felt true. Listen in to Rush's mea sorta culpa.

Joe Klein finally jumped in, and called the report "nonsense" on his Swampland blog, and the blogger who thought the hoax was real also apologized.

Let's hope someone kept their sense of humor in all this. Still, for a humble post to go from humor blog to major media outlet sure seems impressive. Someone ought to write their thesis on it. For real.

Image Bond Wireless

What led you into the wireless business?
I was an associate dean of IT at Bond University in Australia and I got frustrated with my fellow academics who were enthusiastic in conducting pure research but not in developing marketable products, which was unfortunate, since neither government nor industry would finance development without the possibility of commercial return.

So in 1992, I established Bond Wireless together with a graduate student to develop an SMS solution for a transport company wanting to alert commuters about train delays.

You have products like Campaign Messenger, SMS Print, SecureTrans, Greetings2Phone and Telemetry and Vehicle tracking and many others. What are the most popular of your applications worldwide and why?
It's Campaign Messenger, which lets people send bulk SMS messages, easily, instantly and securely from their PC over the Internet to our SMS gateway in Australia which then sends them on to recipients anywhere in the world.

It was one of the first Microsoft .NET certified applications available worldwide when we launched it in 2003.

What is your current focus?

We're marketing our SMS Gateway platform and are looking at franchising our business model for companies wanting to get into providing SMS and VoIP services. For example our Text to Speech application lets you send an SMS to our server, which converts it to speech, calls the recipient's number anywhere in the world and reads it out to them in various languages, including English with UK, Indian, Australian or American accents.

To how many countries and through how many operators do you supply your services?
Our services are available over 500 networks in 150 countries and we have direct 55 carriers and content aggregators worldwide.

What are the most exciting and promising of all these applications overall and which of them do you expect to be the most promising and exciting over the next three to five years?
It's our patented SecureTrans (SMS Authenticated and Verifiable) secure SMS solution which provides non-repudiateable proof of receipt, which is important in mobile-commerce. It's already used in Australia to notify HIV patients of their medical results and high school students of their government exam results.

Do you travel a lot in course with your business, how extensive are your travels, what do you do while travelling and what do you enjoy most about the people, culture, cuisine and so on during your business travels?
Besides regularly coming to Malaysia on business and family matters, I regularly travel on business to Germany, Dubai, the US, China and to South-East Asia, and I've attended international exhibitions and trade shows like CeBIT in Hanover and Sydney, CTIA in the US, CommunicAsia in Singapore and the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes.

I love meeting different people, enjoy cultures and different food and unique culinary cultures like cobra in China, German sausages, elpollo loco chicken in California, escargot in France and of course satay in Malaysia.

Wow! You surely are a connoisseur. What,s your favourite food then?
Satay. I was the satay champion while at Citibank when I ate 86 sticks in under 20 minutes.

Where were you born? Can you tell us a bit about your early days?
I was born in Klang and attended LaSalle School there, where I was one of the top students and was a Selangor state swimmer. I studied electrical engineering at the University of Southern California specialising in computing and completed a dual masters, namely an MBA in Finance and a Masters of Science in Industrial and System Engineering in Robotics.

I then joined Citibank in New York and was among 14 people selected to join its North American Investment Banking Associate Programme and was transferred back here for three years. I got a full scholarship at Bond University to do a PhD in artificial neural network applications in finance and was chair of the Australian Computer Society (ACS), Gold Coast Chapter for some years and was made a fellow.

I still maintain contact with the university and was made an adjunct professor at Bond and Griffith universities on the Gold Coast.

Besides work, what are your other professional or industry-related activities?
I'm involved in the Angels Institute in Australia, which brings experienced professionals to assist technology, health, manufacturing, alternative energy and ICT startups. I'm also involved in the ACS Foundation which provides scholarships to ICT students and industry collaboration.

What do you like doing during your leisure time, what hobbies, sports, interests and family activities?
Playing computer games, badminton, ping pong and chess with my children.

What mobile phone or phones do you currently use and what is your dream phone or device?
The Nokia E70, since its WiFi feature lets me make quality VoIP calls via Bond Wireless server. My dream phone is one running all of Bond Wireless applications enabling people to make cheap, if not free phone calls and SMS.

Will the 'Merchant of Death' Walk?

By Michael Isikoff

U.S. intelligence officials are increasingly nervous that notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout may soon be released from a Thai jail due in part to a pressure campaign by the Russian government aimed at blocking his extradition to the U.S. to stand trial on weapons-trafficking charges.

The 42-year-old Bout, a former Soviet military officer, has long been regarded by many veteran U.S. counterterrrorism and intelligence officials as the ultimate "transnational criminal"—a character straight out of a James Bond novel who eluded capture for years as he allegedly supplied weapons of war to the Taliban; Liberian dictator Charles Taylor; and a host of other rogue regimes, drug traffickers, and criminal organizations.

In what was once viewed as a major coup for U.S. law enforcement, Bout was nabbed by Thai police in a Bangkok luxury hotel last year as part of an elaborate Drug Enforcement Administration sting operation. Bout has been indicted in a New York federal court for conspiring to supply the Colombian FARC (the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia), which the State Department has designated a terrorist organization, with 700 surface-to-air missiles, thousands of guns, and airplanes outfitted with grenade launchers and missiles. Under U.S. law, supplying weapons to any such organization can be prosecuted in American courts.

But Justice and State Department officials have been jolted by recent setbacks to their efforts to have Bout (often dubbed "the Merchant of Death") extradited.

"We may be having our worst nightmare realized—one of the world's worst arms dealers is going to be let go," said Juan Zarate, the former White House counterterrorism adviser under President Bush who had encouraged the DEA to launch the Bout sting and has continued to follow the case closely.

The most stunning defeat came in August when a Thai criminal court rejected the U.S. government's extradition request—on what U.S. officials viewed as the ludicrous grounds that the FARC was a legitimate political organization and not a bona fide terrorist group. The ruling prompted the burly mustachioed Bout to stand up in court and flash a victory sign. Bout, for his part, has maintained his innocence and his associates maintain a Web site that calls the charges against him "ficticious" and "propaganda."

The U.S., working with the Thai attorney general's office, immediately appealed. But late last month, officials in Washington were jolted anew when they got an alarming cable from the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok. The cable reported that the judges on the Thai appellate court had secretly met with the arms dealer, his lawyer, and translator on Sept. 15—without anybody from the U.S. Embassy or the Thai attorney general's office being notified of the session, according to two U.S. law-enforcement officials familiar with the cable who discussed its contents with NEWSWEEK but declined to be identified talking about sensitive matters. An official at the Thai embassy in Washington e-mailed NEWSWEEK a statement saying, "The Court is independent from the government. The government cannot issue a statement or intervene in the process in anyway which affect the outcome of the Court's decision."

(What has been especially infuriating, to U.S. officials, are repeated intelligence reports described to NEWSWEEK by the officials that the Russian government has been pulling out all stops to prevent Bout's extradition, including offering sweetheart oil deals—apparently because of fears that if sent to the United States and confronted with the prospect of decades in federal prison, he may tell what he knows about the complicity of high level members of the Russian military and security services in his activities.

U.S. officials say it is no accident that the Russian Duma, controlled by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's party, passed a resolution last year officially denouncing Bout's "illegal prosecution" and that last February Thailand made its first purchase ever of Russian helicopters, buying six Mi-17 choppers for $9 million a piece.

"It's amazing the lengths to which [the Russians] are going," said one U.S. law-enforcement official who is directly following the case. "The guy knows a lot. His connections go all the way to the top." (Officials at the Russian Embassy in Washington last week did not respond to a request for comment.)

All this has recently gotten the attention of top Obama administration officials. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Attorney General Eric Holder have both raised the issue with Thai government officials. And last week Deputy Attorney General David Ogden made the Bout case the prime topic of a meeting with Thailand's Minister of Justice in Bangkok, telling him and other Thai officials that Bout's extradition is "a matter of great importance to the United States."

The question for U.S. intelligence and law-enforcement officials, however, is whether the high-level attention from Washington may be too little-- and too late.

Dear Mr. Mackey,

I just read your op-ed piece in the WSJ about health care. I am extremely offended by several sections of your article.

"many of our health-care problems are self-inflicted" - my phrenic nerve became paralyzed without cause, or as the doctors call it "idiopathic". This led to my diaphragm muscle having no movement, becoming de and moving up my body cavity, pressing my heart out of alignment. The surgeon who tried to fix the heart problem, botched the surgery leaving me with additional nerve damage and severe side effects. The AMA determined him to be guilty of negligence, but not gross, criminal negligence. They told me that I would win a civil lawsuit, but that criminal charges were not required. Did I sue? No. He screwed up, and all I did was pay my bill.

And now you have the nerve to tell me that my health problems are self-inflicted. Wow. Because of this doctor's negligence, I cannot walk up a flight of stairs without vomiting. But clearly, I must be to blame.

Your arrogance is disgusting and repulsive.

Do you know why you get to be so arrogant? Because of chance. You have the good luck to have started the right kind of business at the right time. You have the good luck to have your health.

Right now, riding the peak of your success and feeling your great health, you think that you have somehow mastered the world, and that you deserve all of this, that you have created your good health. But the truth is that the control anyone feels they have in life is an illusion. And in one moment you can learn this simple truth.

The control you feel you have over your life and your health is an illusion. I know you don't believe me now. And to be honest I wouldn't wish on anyone, even someone as callous and arrogant as yourself, to have to learn this lesson in their own life.

But one moment and it is all gone. A simple cold virus can move to your heart muscle and in weeks you can be dead. A cut so small as to be not visible to the human eye can let an invisible bacteria into your body and cause a septic reaction powerful enough to kill within days.

How Diwali is celebrated in different states

From lifekafunda

Jump to: navigation, search

Almost everyone says his or her early memories of Diwali revolve around preparations: like refurbishing their homes and preparing sweets in anticipation of Diwali.

Each state has theirown particular way of celebrating...

in Uttar Pradesh, the special Diwali menu at home is Penthewali kachori and lapsi, a sweet Halwa made of daliya (broken wheat) in Karnataka, it's Kajjaya and Wadas... In Kerala, it's Appams and Muruku... In Maharashtra it's Boondi laadu and Chiwda... And so on...

But no matter which state, the oil massage, easrly morning shower and new clothes are an absolute must to begin the celebrations.

For the men who will be boys, firecrackers and being allowed to play outside after dark were the dominant memories of childhood Diwalis.

And thenthere are the Diwali Melas -- with food, lots of goodies to buy and rides.

In fact, an Army Mela -- while they were both students at the Delhi College of Eng

Celebrating Diwali in India is very different from celebrating it abroad. But there are marked differences between how people celebrate Diwali in the US based on whether they have children or not, whether there is a sizeable population of Indians where they live and how long it has been since they returned to India. Of course the level of celebration increases when they have children.

What is Diwali?

Diwali

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is the most popular of all the festivals from South Asia, and is also the occasion for celebrations by Jains and Sikhs as well as Hindus.

The festival of Diwali extends over five days. Because of the lights, fireworks, and sweets involved, it's a great favourite with children.

The festival celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance, although the actual legends that go with the festival are different in different parts of India.

The modern meaning of Diwali

Regardless of the mythological explanation one prefers, what the festival of lights really stands for today is a reaffirmation of hope, a renewed commitment to friendship and goodwill, and a religiously sanctioned celebration of the simple - and some not so simple - joys of life.

Diwali datesThe date of Diwali is set by the Hindu calendar and so it varies in the Western calendar. It usually falls in October or November.

Diwali is a New Year festival in the Vikrama calendar, where it falls on the night of the new moon in the month of Kartika.

Business people regard it as a favourable day to start a new accounting year because of the festival's association with the goddess of wealth.

Diwali is also used to celebrate a successful harvest.

A row of lights The name of the festival comes from the Sanskrit word dipavali, meaning row of lights.

Diwali is known as the 'festival of lights' because houses, shops, and public places are decorated with small earthenware oil lamps called diyas. These lamps, which are traditionally fueled by mustard oil, are placed in rows in windows, doors and outside buildings to decorate them.

The lamps are lit to help the goddess Lakshmi find her way into people's homes. They also celebrate one of the Diwali legends, which tells of the return of Rama and Sita to Rama's kingdom after fourteen years of exile.

In towns (and in Britain) electric lights are often used in Diwali displays.

In India oil lamps are often floated across the river Ganges - it is regarded as a good omen if the lamp manages to get all the way across.

FireworksFireworks are also a big part of the Diwali celebrations, although in recent years there has been a move against them because of noise and atmospheric pollution and the number of accidental deaths and injuries.

Goddesses Two Goddesses in particular are celebrated at Diwali: Lakshmi and Kali.

Lakshmi, wealth and prosperity For many Indians the festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.

People start the new business year at Diwali, and some Hindus will say prayers to the goddess for a successful year.

Some people build a small altar to the goddess and decorate it with money and with pictures of the rewards of wealth, such as cars and houses.

Celebrating LakshmiHindus will leave the windows and doors of their houses open so that Lakshmi can come in. Rangoli are drawn on the floors - rangoli are patterns and the most popular subject is the lotus flower. This because images of Lakshmi traditionally show her either holding a lotus or sitting on one.

There is much feasting and celebration, and the Diwali lamps are regarded as making it easy for Lakshmi to find her way to favoured houses.

Kali The goddess Kali is celebrated at Diwali in the Bengali and Oriya areas of India.

GamblingThe downside of the festival is that many Indians see it as an occasion to gamble. This comes from a legend that the that goddess Parvati played dice with her husband on this day and she said that anyone who gambled on Diwali night would do well.

Gifts Like Christmas in the West, Diwali is very much a time for buying and exchanging gifts.

Traditional Indian sweetsTraditionally sweets and dried fruit were very common gifts to exchange, but the festival has become a time for serious shopping, leading to anxiety that commercialism is eroding the spiritual side of the festival.

In most years shopkeepers expect sales to rise substantially in the weeks before the festival.

Diwali is also a traditional time to redecorate homes and buy new clothes.

Some Diwali legendsThe night is black Kindle the lamp of love With thy life and devotion. Two of the legends of Diwali show the triumph of Good over Evil, and tell of the destruction of two monsters that preyed on humanity.

The killing of the demon NarakaasuraThe demon was the evil king of Pragjyotishpur, near Nepal. He ruled with a reign of terror, abducted 16,000 daughters of the gods, and stole the earings of Aditi, mother of the gods.

The gods asked Lord Krishna for help, and after a mighty battle he killed the demon, freed the girls, and recovered the earrings.

The rescue of the 16,000 girls is said to be the origin of the story that Krishna had 16,000 wives. After his victory Krishna returned very early in the morning and was bathed and massaged with scented oils. Taking an early morning bath with oil is still a Diwali tradition.

The killing of the demon RavanaRavana, who had ten arms and ten heads, was the wicked king of the island of Sri Lanka, who kidnapped the wife of Rama. Rama had been in exile for 14 years because of a disagreement as to whether he or his brother should be the next king in Ayodhya.

After a great battle Rama killed the demon and recovered his wife. Rama's return with his wife Sita to Ayodhya and his subsequent coronation as king is celebrated at Diwali.

When Rama and Sita first returned to Ayodhya it was a dark moonless night and they couldn't see where they were going. Their people put little lamps outside their houses so that the new king and queen could find their way, thus beginning the tradition of the festival of lights.

Diwali is regarded as one of the most important festival of the Hindu calendar. It is celebrated across the nation with great pomp and excitement. The festival is mainly associated with lights as it is called the festival of light. On the day of the festival diyas (small clay lamps) are lit in everybody's home irrespective of their social status. The name Diwali signifies 'rows of lighted lamps'. Diwali is a five-day festival, beginning on the 15th day of the Hindu calendar month of Kartika (Ashwin). By the Gregorian calendar, Diwali falls in October or November. Diwali marks the beginning of the Hindu and Gujarati New Year and is celebrated with the lighting of lamps and candles, and lots of fireworks. People decorate their home with beautiful diyas and making rangoli pattern in the courtyard and in front of the gate. They put flowers and mango leaves on their doors and windows. Diyas and candles are placed on rooftops, rooms, and kitchen and even in the bathrooms. On this day, people worship Lord Ganesha, the foremost of all Hindu Gods and Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity. It is time to exchange gifts and sweets with friends, relatives and neighbors.

Due to India's varied cultural diversity there are many manifestations of the Diwali festival. The festival begins with Dhanteras, a day set aside to worship the goddess of prosperity, Goddess Lakshmi. On this day, homes are cleaned and paintings are done. There are various legends associated with the celebration of Diwali. But people mostly associate the celebration with the legend of Lord Ram returning to his kingdom of Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and defeating Ravana, the demon king. In Bengal, the celebration is marked with the worship of Goddess Kali. People celebrate Kali puja with great fervor and enthusiasm. Joy and festivity reins every corner of the nation during the Diwali season. Diwali festival is the one Hindu festival that unites the whole of India. The exchange of sweets and the explosion of fireworks customarily accompany the celebration of the festival. Diwali is an occasion for cheerfulness and togetherness. This is that time of the year when people of all age and all class take part in its celebration.
