Cildo Meireles Fontes Ruler
Cildo Meireles
Inspired by the Cildo Meireles exhibition at Tate Modern, this kit allows you to create replica rulers which featured in the installation, Fontes 1992/2008.
Fontes 1992/2008 featured approximately 6000 of these carpenter's rulers, 1000 clocks and 500,000 vinyl numbers in a dramatic display shaped as the Milky Way, highlighting the phenomena of time and space that mankind attempts to limit and measure.
The perhaps most poignant element of the display, and the key to these rulers, is the undermining of their very purpose as the order of their numbers and the spacing of their measurements are illogical, drawing attention to the meaningless of the human measuring system in such a vast and unknown cosmos.
In this little set, you are invited to created your own Meireles ruler, adding lines and numbers to the blank ruler in any way you like. The set comes in a cardboard tube and contains a fold-up carpenter's ruler and two sheets of dry-transfer decals (one of lines and one of numbers) which you simply rub to transfer onto the ruler.
